Lofgren Applauds Senate Markup on S. 1, The For The People Act

Press Release

San Jose, Calif. – Today Committee on House Administration Chairperson Zoe Lofgren (D-Calif.) issued the following statement as the Senate Committee on Rules and Administration held a markup on S. 1, the For The People Act:

“It is past time to hand power back to the American people.  The For The People Act will lift barriers to the ballot box and helps ensure all Americans have a say in the issues that impact their lives.  It will advance the public interest, not special interests, and it will return commonsense accountability to our politics.  House and Senate Democrats are united in our efforts to pass this sweeping legislation and answer the call of an overwhelming majority of Democrats, Republicans, and Independents who support it.

“I applaud Chairwoman Klobuchar and Senator Merkley for working to advance this bill to deliver democracy for all Americans while incorporating the feedback of state election officials from both parties and several concerns expressed by our Republican colleagues.  Today’s markup is a significant step towards achieving equal access to voting for all Americans and a government that truly reflects the will of the people.”

H.R. 1, the For the People Act, passed the House of Representatives by a vote of 220 – 210 on March 3, 2021. This legislation, introduced by Representative John Sarbanes (D-Md.), is a sweeping package of the most transformational pro-democracy, anti-corruption reforms in a generation.  For more information about H.R. 1, the For the People Act, click here.
