Lofgren Statement On Passage of the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act
San Jose, Calif. – Committee on House Administration Chairperson Zoe Lofgren (D-Calif.) issued the following statement today regarding on passage of the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act. The bill ensures safe, secure and accessible elections for all, enhances the ability of every American to cast their ballots freely, equally and without interference, restores and strengthens the Voting Rights Act, and sets national standards for voting access to guarantee the right to vote in our nation’s democracy:
"Since our nation's inception, the sacred right to vote in our elections has held as a core pillar in our democracy. But this right has been under brutal and relentless attack by Republicans trying to deter eligible voters from casting their ballots. The House of Representatives today responded to this assault on our democracy with the passage of the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act.
“The bill includes two pieces of legislation vital to ensuring every American has free, equitable, and secure access to the ballot – the Freedom to Vote Act and the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, versions of which have previously passed the House in H.R. 1 and H.R. 4. Together, these landmark reforms would help ensure Americans can safely and freely cast their ballots, and our elections reflect the will of the people. Importantly, the protection and preservation of our democracy is guaranteed through the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act."
