Lofgren Statement on Select Committee to Investigate the January 6 Attack on the U.S. Capitol
Washington, D.C. – Committee on House Administration Chairperson Zoe Lofgren (D-Calif.) issued the following statement today upon House passage of H.Res. 503, a resolution establishing a Select Committee to Investigate the January 6 Attack on the United States Capitol.
“Since the January 6 attack, Democrats negotiated in good faith with our Republican colleagues to compromise on a bill to form a robust, independent, 9/11-style commission to investigate the deadly insurrection and attack on the Capitol. Despite Republican Leadership whipping their members in opposition, that bill passed the House with strong, bipartisan support. Shamefully, Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell successfully urged his colleagues to filibuster that bipartisan compromise as a ‘personal favor’ to him. Today’s vote further demonstrates that many Republicans in Congress would rather leave the questions of that day unanswered.
“That is not an option. The American people deserve answers about this assault on our Democracy. Who ordered it? Who paid for it? Why did thousands of people assault and maim the Capitol Police, break into the Capitol, make violent threats against the Vice President, Speaker and others, and apparently think it was right to do so? Why did they wrongly think it was possible to overturn the election?
“We need the truth. We need answers.”
