Lofgren Statement on Unofficial California Ballot Drop Boxes

Press Release

San Jose, Calif. – Committee on House Administration Chairperson Zoe Lofgren (D-Calif.) issued the following statement today regarding the California Republican Party’s deployment of unofficial ballot drop boxes throughout the state:

“California law allows voters to designate a person to deliver their completed ballot for them.  Groups, including political parties, churches and civic organizations, can legally organize efforts to secure designations and deliver ballots in batches.  What can’t be done in California is to falsely label private unsecured boxes as an “official” ballot box.  That’s illegal, deceptive, and a disgrace.”

On October 13, California Secretary of State Alex Padilla and Attorney General Xavier Becerra sent a cease and desist order to the California Republican Party to stop operating unofficial ballot drop boxes. The deadline for compliance is today, October 15.

The Committee on House Administration is charged with Congressional oversight over federal elections.
