Lofgren Statement on White House Relief Proposal
San Jose, Calif. – Committee on House Administration Chairperson Zoe Lofgren (D-Calif.) issued the following statement today regarding the White House’s latest coronavirus relief offer:
“The latest White House proposal includes massive tax breaks for corporations and the wealthiest people in America but no funding for PPE for America's poll workers. While the President peddles bogus conspiracy theories about voting by mail, his proposal provides no funding for state and local governments to conduct either safe in person or safe mail voting.
“House Democrats acted five months ago to pass the Heroes Act which included provisions for fair elections and funding for state and local governments to conduct elections. The COVID pandemic, which the President downplays publicly, has put financial strain on our states and our Post Office when it comes to this election. It is simply outrageous that the President proposes to do nothing to secure the fundamental element of our precious American democracy – an election where every American must be able to cast his or her vote freely and have certainty that the vote will be counted accurately. Their proposal is a disgrace.”
