Brady Introduces Automatic Registration Proposal; Will Add Millions Of New Voters

Jul 14, 2016
Press Release

Today, Ranking Member Robert A. Brady (D – Pennsylvania), introduced H.R. 5779, the Automatic Voter Registration Act of 2016.

The proposal is a comprehensive approach to modernizing our outdated voter registration system.  The Act mandates that state and federal agencies and state election officials work together to automatically register any eligible citizen that wants to register to vote.  Robust data management standards ensure the safe, accurate, and private maintenance of information.  It also provides for internet registration as well as the opportunity to correct or update registration information online.

“It is long past due that we modernize and reform our voter registration system. There are tens of millions of eligible voters who are not registered to vote, denied the right to participate in their democracy. We need to change that. By streamlining our registration system we can make sure that everyone has access to the ballot,” Ranking Member Brady said.
