Brady Statement on Sarbanes’ Government By the People Act

Feb 5, 2014
Press Release

February 5, 2014 (Washington, D.C.) Today, Committee on House Administration Ranking Member Robert Brady (D-PA), issued a statement in support of the Government By the People Act, legislation introduced by Representative John Sarbanes (D-MD). Brady is an original co-sponsor of the legislation.

“Ever since the Citizens United decision, the American people have been bombarded with messages paid for with secret money by organizations with unknown intentions, which go to extreme lengths to hide their donors. Everyone is sick of it, and it’s time we start working on solutions to this problem. I commend Rep. Sarbanes and all of Leader Pelosi’s taskforce on election reform on their hard work. Our election system is riddled with problems and it’s time for our Republican colleagues to come to the table and start working with us to find solutions.”

The Government By the People Act provides for a system of matching contributions. It also provides for a tax credit for those who make small dollar contributions. The act empowers everyday Americans by creating a refundable My Voice Tax Credit. By relying on small-donor contributions, candidates will be accountable to the many and not the money.
