WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Committee on House Administration Chairman Candice Miller, R-Mich., issued the following statement on Smithsonian Secretary Wayne Clough’s announcement to step down as Secretary in October 2014:

“Responsible for over 130 million items housed in 19 museums and research facilities, Secretary Clough has done an outstanding job managing and preserving our national treasures. Upon accepting the position as Secretary in 2008, Clough immediately took action to address known problems with the Institution’s collections management. And through his strategic vision, he brought the Institution’s operations into the 21st century and broadened access to the collections through digitization and educational outreach.

“Much to his credit, the Smithsonian has remained one of the world’s leading authorities in education and research. I thank Dr. Clough for his service to the Smithsonian and its important mission.”
