Chairman Steil, Rep. Miller Demand Answers from Champaign County, IL over Suspension of Early Voting and Serious Ballot Printing Errors

October 9, 2026

WASHINGTON – Today, Committee on House Administration Chairman Bryan Steil (WI-01) and Committee Member Rep. Mary Miller (IL-15) sent a letter to the Clerk and Recorder of Champaign County, Illinois demanding answers after early voting was recently suspended without notice. Reportedly, over 600 ballots had fatal printing errors.

“Champaign County has faced repeated election problems of their own making, and the Clerk’s office has consistently failed to get the basics right,” said Congresswoman Mary Miller. “This can no longer be brushed off as an isolated mistake. Voters deserve accountability and proof the Clerk’s office can run a reliable election in November.”

Below are excerpts pulled from the letter:

“The Committee is seeking information based on recent reporting that Champaign County suspended early voting."

“On Monday, October 5, your office announced that nearly 600 voters received ballots with incorrect names of candidates for public office. The errors included a race for a local county executive that was mislabeled as a Congressional race. Ballot printing errors and unilateral suspensions in voting undermine public confidence in the nation’s elections. This issue merits careful attention and assurance that it will not reoccur.”
