WASHINGTON – Committee on House Administration Chairman Gregg Harper (R-Miss.) today held a hearing on the Smithsonian Institution’s priorities. The Committee heard from Dr. David Skorton, Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, on the new strategic plan which is currently being drafted. Chairman Harper said:

“The Smithsonian Institution plays an important role in collecting and preserving our nation’s history and culture, as well as working with entities around the world to advance critical scientific discovery and research. We appreciated the opportunity to hear from Secretary Skorton to discuss the goals of the new strategic plan that is being drafted and will guide the Smithsonian Institution in the future.

“Secretary Skorton outlined many priorities and challenges the Smithsonian must confront within a constrained funding environment – particularly the growing list of deferred maintenance projects; the substantial revitalization of the National Air and Space Museum; and protecting collections for their future use. These realities should be carefully considered in the upcoming strategic plan. Our Committee looks forward to reviewing the final version of the strategic plan upon its completion, and to supporting the Smithsonian Institution’s continued efforts to document the American experience and making these moments accessible to all.”
