WASHINGTON - Today, Committee on House Administration Chairman Bryan Steil (WI-01) sent a letter demanding answers from the District of Columbia Board of Elections following a recent postcard found to encourage non-citizen voting. The letter asks a series of questions related to the Local Resident Voting Rights Amendment Act of 2022, specifically how D.C. will ensure non-citizens cannot vote in federal elections and how D.C.’s voter lists are being maintained. Chairman Steil has released the following statement in response to sending the letter:

"American elections are for American citizens only," said Chairman Steil. "Every American deserves to have confidence in their elections, and it does not instill confidence when we see our nation's capital encourage non-citizen voting in local elections. I’m working to hold the D.C. Board of Elections accountable and stop non-citizen voting."

Excerpts of the letter include:

As Chairman of the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on House Administration, which has broad oversight of our nation’s federal elections, I write today to express my concern about the District of Columbia’s Local Resident Voting Rights Amendment Act of 2022 (“Act”), which allows non-citizens to vote in local elections. Despite the Act’s passage by the District of Columbia (“D.C.”) Council, federal law continues to prohibit non-citizens from voting in federal elections.

Not only is D.C. allowing non-citizens to vote, but the Board is actively encouraging it. In addition to Board staff hosting a virtual townhall focused on the ability of non-citizen D.C. residents to vote, the Committee has received notice regarding a postcard mailed by the Board to “Residential Customers” advocating for non-citizens to register to vote in D.C. elections.
