Washington, DC – Committee on House Administration Ranking Member Rodney Davis (R-Ill.) today released this statement after H.R. 1/S. 1 failed to advance in the Senate:

"H.R. 1/S. 1, which was introduced long before this Congress, has never been about Americans' right to vote – more Americans voted in the last two elections than in any presidential or midterm election in our nation's history. It's about a federal takeover of elections. It's about Democrats rigging the system in their favor. Not only can this be seen by reading the legislation, but by the disinformation campaign coming from the left.

"Democrats have accused anyone, even members of their own party, who oppose H.R. 1/S. 1 of supporting
modern-day Jim Crow laws. This ridiculous accusation is not based on merit – Democrats have earned multiple pinocchios by fact checkers for lying about these state laws – but it's a false narrative critical to their efforts to nationalize our elections. Democrats want Americans to believe states are enacting racist laws, designed to suppress the votes of African Americans, to justify a Washington takeover. In reality, states are actively working on reform initiatives to improve voter access, election security, and bolster voter confidence in elections processes and outcomes.

"The Constitution gives states the primary authority over our elections and that's exactly where it should remain. I applaud my Republican colleagues in the Senate for stopping H.R. 1/S. 1, but I'm afraid our fight to protect states' rights to run their elections is far from over."
