WASHINGTON - Committee on House Administration Chairman Bryan Steil (WI-01) released a statement following the passage of the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act.

"American elections are for American citizens only," Chairman Steil said. "As Chairman of the Committee on House Administration, I have worked to improve election integrity and increase confidence in our elections. By passing the SAVE Act, we are one step closer to preventing noncitizen voting and protecting American elections.”

Background:

The House passed the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act today by a vote of 221 - 198. 

On May 16, the Committee on House Administration held a hearing with several top election integrity witnesses to discuss the SAVE Act and noncitizen voting in our elections. 

On May 23, the Committee on House Administration passed the SAVE Act by a vote of 6-1 out of Committee.

The SAVE Act:

• Helps prevent noncitizens from voting by updating the National Voter Registration Act to require States to obtain documentary proof of U.S. citizenship when registering an individual to vote.

• Strengthens our election administration and restores Americans' confidence in our elections.

• Allows States to access federal databases containing citizenship information to help the States perform voter list maintenance and remove noncitizens from the voter rolls.
