Democrats on House Administration Offer an Amendment to DISCLOSE Act That Would Force American Taxpayers to Fund Political Campaigns

WASHINGTON - Today, at the House Administration markup of the DISCLOSE Act (H.R. 5175), Rep. Michael Capuano, D-Mass., introduced a public financing amendment that would force American taxpayers to fund political campaigns.

The provision, which was eventually withdrawn, would have forced American taxpayers to subsidize congressional campaigns at an estimated annual cost of $850 million.

"As though the crippling effects this bill would have on political speech aren't bad enough, Democrats disclosed their true objective today by offering an amendment that would force taxpayers to foot the bill for political campaigns," the Committee's Ranking Republican noted after the markup. "I find it extremely concerning that some of my colleagues in this Chamber have a seemingly cavalier approach to legislation of such consequence to the American people and their right to free speech."
