WASHINGTON - Committee on House Administration Ranking Member Rodney Davis (R-Ill.) issued the following statement after he received responses from the Federal Election Commission (FEC) to his inquiries on the recent partisan behavior at the agency. These responses come in anticipation of tomorrow's Committee Oversight Hearing of the FEC at 9:00 a.m.

"Last month, I sent a letter to the FEC about my concerns of partisan behavior by some at the agency and how that threatens to undermine the overall mission of the Commission. It is alarming to me that the commissioners are not even in agreement in their responses as to what is the basic mission of the FEC. In several instances, the commissioners submitted different and even contrary responses to my inquiries," said Ranking Member Davis.

"Chair Ellen Weintraub, for instance, states in her response that 'recent developments in U.S. elections' have expanded the Federal Election Commission's jurisdiction to areas not supported by statute, while Commissioner Caroline Hunter maintains the FEC's jurisdiction is limited to 'enforcing provisions of federal law pertaining to how candidates, parties, PACs, and certain other actors raise, spend, and disclose funds related to federal elections.'"

"I am unaware of any changes to federal statute made by Congress that would allow for an 'expanded role' of the Federal Election Commission by the Chair's definition. I plan to address discrepancies such as these, as well as this uptick in partisan behavior at the Commission during tomorrow's committee hearing."
