Committee on House Administration Ranking Member Rodney Davis (R-Ill.) today released this statement after the Senate Rules and Administration Committee marked up S. 1:
"Democrats continue to try to sell this bill as a ‘voting rights' bill, but when you have a real debate, as the Senate did for more than eight hours, you show the American people what is really in this bill. This debate brought to light the fact that H.R. 1/S. 1 would give a U.S. Senator's campaign as much as $80 million in public funds, something most Democrats fail to mention when talking about this bill. It would destroy the First Amendment, limiting your right to free speech and regulating political speech. The bill now makes the FEC, which regulates campaign finance, a partisan agency. H.R. 1/S. 1 nationalizes our elections by dismantling voter ID laws, making ballot harvesting legal nationwide, and mandating other election administration requirements. This partisan bill is not about voting rights, it's about taking over our elections to secure a one-party rule."
