Ranking Republican on House Administration Criticizes Democrats for Advancing Legislation Designed to Bail Out Struggling Politicians at the Expense of American Taxpayers

WASHINGTON - Today, after Democrats on House Administration voted to advance costly public financing legislation (H.R. 6116), the Committee's Ranking Republican Dan Lungren, R-Calif., issued the following statement:

"This bill is a blatant, costly bailout for struggling politicians that will undoubtedly and unfairly heap more debt on the backs of Americans facing the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression.

"Although proponents of this legislation falsely claim that this bill won't cost taxpayers a dime, American voters know better. It doesn't matter if it comes from the sale of public spectrum or fines collected by the FEC. It is the public's money, and Congress has no right using it to bail out struggling politicians.

"Unfortunately, today's vote is just another example of Democrats' unwillingness to address the real problems plaguing this country. Instead of working to help unemployed Americans find jobs, House Democrats are working on ways to save their own."
